Players and Tactical Formation

Waldir – Goalkeeper

Made a big mistake against USSR on the first match of the tournament and never has been the keeper that gives confidence to a defensive sector.

Leandro – Right Back

Very attacking right back, did really good crosses with decisive assists also. Some problems defending, the tactical system was risky for his position.

Oscar – Central Defender

Dangerous on set pieces, scored a goal with a header. But he was not the defense commander that this team needed with a bad game against Italy.

Luisinho – Central Defender

Good reading of the game, very efficient and reliable. However he couldn´t stop Paolo Rossi on the decisive day.

Junior – Left Back

With very good attacking skills, his action was important to imbalance the other teams, and he even scored against Argentina a brilliant goal. But against Italy it was a dark day for him.

Cerezo – Central Midfielder

Solid defensive midfielder, he had big influence on the ball recovery and giving balance to the team. He didn´t make any impact on the attack.

Falcão – Central Midfielder

One of the key players of the team, did a really good tournament, giving consistency to the midfield and going forward to score amazing goals.

Socrates – Attacking Midfielder

A genius player with a very good first touch that helped him to have key contributions within his team attacking moves. He scored two magnificent goals along the world cup.

Zico – Attacking Midfielder

The key player of the offensive process of the team with a fantastic technique and ball control, he did some very good assists and scored beautiful goals.

Eder – Left/Centre Forward

He played very well on the first group phase with fantastic goals on the left side, full of emotion and class. However he was not a key player in the decisive games.

Serginho – Striker

Scored two goals but he was not the striker that this team deserved, with some poor finishes and not playing at the same level of his team mates.

Telé Santana – Coach

One of the most charismatic coaches ever, he did a tremendous job, creating the magic square, which was immense on getting the best of his talented midfield players.

The mystic around this team started in the first game against USSR. Not playing well and losing 1-0 at half time, they had a great reaction and won the game 2-1 with two fantastic goals that showed the enormous power and will this team had to win the tournament.

A brilliant team play against Scotland with a 4-1 win, with many moments of world class by his players, confirmed that there was something magic about this team. It was a pleasure to see such a technique and team play, with the wing backs getting involved in the attack and all the midfield players could appear in the area to score.

Against New Zealand, another win, 4-0, with more pieces of collective game and tremendous technique goals, and at this stage Brazil was the big favorite to win the tournament, despite tough opponents that would follow.

Then came Argentina, the current World Champions, but Brazil raised his level and more three great goals were score and a fair victory happened, sending the archrivals home. Four games, four wins, an average of more than 3 goals per game, high confidence and very good shape, Brazil needed just a draw against Italy to be in last four.

But disaster and lack of concentration would kill Brazil hopes, and an inspired Paolo Rossi scored a hat trick to end this dream team run. Despite two brilliant goals, a 3-2 loss meant that the most exciting team was out of the race.

The 1982 World Cup Brazil National Team taught us all a lesson that to win it´s not enough to  be the best at ball control and creating chances, because you also need a solid structure to prevent goals and this team missed that.

I was just two years old and I don´t remember seeing this team playing, but after seeing the videos, I can´t help to fall in love with this efficient machine of scoring goals and dominate the opponents. It´s hard to score so many goals in a World Cup, only a brilliant team would score three against Argentina and coming back twice against Italy. And the goals were never just lucky, there are really hard work within those fifteen magic goals that this team scored. But we have to face the fact that against Italy, the goals conceded were really inadmissible, Paolo Rossi, was without marking twice and received a bad mistake in the other goal. Even this team wouldn´t survive to so many mistakes in a game.

I am a romantic and I would love to see in the history books that Brazil won the 1982 World Cup, but at least I can say that these beautiful goals were far from useless and being the first team to have a tribute in our site, means that they were really special and they won respect and make the passion about football grow worldwide. And this is probably more valuable and more difficult to achieve than the Cup.
